Modern dating seems to be about "finding" the right person for me (as my friend Michael Lawrence has written on this site); biblical dating is more about "being" the right person to serve my future spouse's needs and be a God-glorifying husband or wife.
2. In modern dating, intimacy precedes commitment. In biblical dating, commitment precedes intimacy.
3. The modern dating approach tells us that the way to figure out whether I want to marry someone is to act like we are married. If we like it, we make it official. If we don't, then we go through something emotionally — and probably physically — like a divorce. In biblical dating, Scripture guides us as to how to find a mate and marry, and the Bible teaches, among other things, that we should act in such a way so as not to imply a marriage-level commitment until that commitment exists before the Lord.

Now here's something you don't see everyday - a student devotional on dating, from Awana.

What are your thoughts?

Is It Time to Take a Break From Blogging?

From Pro-blogger, 8 times you might need a break from blogging. And my answers:

bloggers block - Uh, yeah. Clearly that is not a problem.

when everything you do is ‘blogable’ - More likely.

when it intrudes on family - A subtle danger which I addressed at my Titus 2 blog not long ago.

when you have unrealistic expectations - Now many of the readers of Pro-blogger will have a different set of expectations from mine (perhaps concerning income), but I am still susceptible to disappointments. When I remember that I am primarily here for the social, I am less likely to burn myself out in foolishness.

when it intrudes on your health - I prefer not to admit that my neck and shoulders do get tired. Anybody have any ergonomic suggestions?

at the end of the week - It's interesting. I notice that, as a whole, many of the fashion bloggers post more on the weekends, but SAHMs tend to take the weekends off.

at vacation time - I have no choice. Where I go on vacation, there is no internet, not even cell phone service.

when your sleep suffers - A definite intrusion on health and, in my case, a quick route to marital problems.

But on the bright side, blogging could be a great way to lose those last five pounds. It worked for me.

Here's your chance, is it time for me to take a break from blogging? How about you?

True or False: Men Need Meat

Brrrr!!! This has been one cold week in the Great Northwest and over at my everyday blog coats have been the topic. On the heels of a major food failure (dinner served at 9 at night, due to ... yada, yada), I'm back to thinking about seasonal eating. Here's the question:

Do men NEED meat? More specifically, do men need more protein than women? And do we all need more protein in the winter?
Popular among budget-conscious young mothers, I've served plenty of meatless meals; but honestly, if I had it to do over again, I'd feed my husband more meat. Something that everyone already has.

Ubiquity is killing these trends:

Skinny Jeans = everyone’s got’em, no longer desireable
Reality Television Fame = everyone’s tainted, no longer desireable
Actual Celebrity Fame = oversaturated, no longer desireable
Fashion Design Degree = dime a dozen, no longer desireable
Printed T-Shirt Lines = you do ‘em, I do ‘em, anyone can do ‘em, no longer desireable.

These are things that I think have become rare enough to develop into new trends:

Back to the Land = everyone’s been flooding into the cities for a long time now. We’re ripe for a revival of this idea.
Non-Distressed Denim = it lasts longer and is more authentic, and seeing an honestly worn-out pair of jeans is a rare event.
Craftspeople and Technicians = when everyone is designer and white collar, suddenly people who can actually execute ideas are far rarer and much more impressive.

What else have you not seen around for a while? What can you think of that few people are doing?

Kicking these questions around a little longer seems appropriate.

I'll add one more answer (I left one over there too): How about we ditch the tired old public school, segregated-by-age model for EVERYTHING and start just getting together in organic, multi-age groups? Could that account for the growing popularity of homeschooling?

How Much Time Alone Do You Need?

When I asked this question before, the consensus seemed to be that it deserved a post of its own.
